Going Back To Work? 3 Tips To Ease The Transition

Posted on: 7 December 2016

After spending so much time at home with your child, it is normal to feel both excited and a little nervous about heading back to work. After all, this represents a big change in the routine for your entire family. Fortunately, these tips will help you transition your child to their new daytime environment while streamlining the process of getting everyone out of the door in the morning.

Prep The Night Before

Avoid the morning rush by getting as much as you can ready the night before. This is especially important if you must wash and make bottles or finish work you brought home from the office. Many parents go so far as to lay out their entire outfits, complete with accessories. Do this for your older kids, and they will be able to get dressed by themselves.

Prepare Your New Boss

Whether you are starting a new career or returning to your former workplace, it helps to clue your boss in that the first week may be a little hectic. While you may put every effort into making the transition go smoothly, you may run late or forget something important at home. Making sure your boss understands will help you relax as you go about your new routine.

Visit Your Child's Classroom

Babies and children quickly adjust to their daycare program, and you can help with the transition by taking them for a short visit before their first day. During this visit, they can explore the new classroom and get excited about the things they will get to do while you are at work. Meeting the teacher and seeing new friends will make them more comfortable when it is time for their first drop-off.

Create a Ritual

Working parents often find that morning drop-off and pick-up times can be challenging. For this reason, creating a ritual will be soothing for both you and your child. Say a silly joke, rub noses or exchange a special toy or bracelet. Then, do it all over again when you pick your child up. Having a ritual in place provides a sense of security for your child that they will carry with them throughout the day.

Going back to work is a big change for your family, but you can make sure it is a good one by taking a little time to prepare. Talking to your boss, meeting your child's new teachers and planning to make drop-offs at daycare fun will all streamline your routine so that everyone quickly adjusts to your family's new lifestyle.
